1.5.0. at Lenoir Mainstreet

Carolina Dining Services opened a new dining concept, 1.5.0, on January 11, 2010. For the past two years, 1.5.0. has served the UNC campus community the best local, organic and sustainable foods available in a quick and friendly style that follows through on our commitment to sustainability in our menu and our space.

1.5.0.’s seasonal menu features food that is locally grown and harvested and freshly prepared by chefs who are trained in culinary sustainability. Menu items also include organic produce and grains, cage-free eggs and poultry, grass fed beef, sustainable seafood and house-made breads, dressings and sauces.  In addition to providing a healthy and sustainable retail dining option, 1.5.0. offers an engaging and educational experience for customers. An LCD screen displays farmer profiles, sustainable goals and eco-saving techniques that connect our customers to local farms and teach them how to incorporate sustainable habits into their daily lives.

The brand name, 1.5.0., was selected by members of Carolina Dining Services’ Student Dining Board and refers to our commitment to local food purchasing from within a 150-mile radius.

Sustainable food products support the long-term maintenance and restoration of ecosystems and agriculture for future generations. Local foods strengthen and support small farms and local economies, and purchasing locally reduces the amount of carbon output associated with transportation primarily by fossil fuels. Organic agriculture prohibits the use of toxic pesticides, fertilizers, irradiation, sewage sludge and genetic engineering.

The 4 Goals of 1.5.0

Goal 1: Serve Local & Sustainable Food
Locally sourced foods are defined as items grown or produced within a radius of 150 miles. Our partnerships with local farms and suppliers support the growth and availability of fresh whole foods raised, grown and harvested sustainably- positively impacting our health and supporting our local economy.

We engage in the positive, ethical buying of products and services, aiming to enrich local communities. We also
challenge ourselves to be mindful of our actions effects and accountable for our environmental actions.

Goal 2: Wall 2 Wall
We are committed to providing a healthy environment for our patrons and staff while minimizing our environmental
footprint to protect our finite natural resources.

Goal 3: Operate SMART
Our employee uniforms are locally made with 100% organic cotton. We also use 100% unbleached and recycled content napkins, Green Seal certified cleaning products and practice energy and water conservation.

Goal 4: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We continually strive to promote and practice waste reduction and recycling in our operations to help sustain our natural resources and divert waste from landfills.
